5 Myths about being (or not being) creative
I have always been creative, maybe not ‘einstein’ or ‘da vinci’ creative, but I have been creatve none the less. And, in my plight for new and creative things, I have run into the same 5 misconceptions over and over. Now I am here to tell you once and for all – none of them are true!
1. Creativity is a gift, you can’t learn it: Some people are absolutely born with more creativity than others – but no one (and I mean no one!!!) can’t be creative. Creativity is something that you have to work at, train yourself to be and strive to have more of. And, even if someone is born with creativity in them, it doesn’t mean they will know how to use it.
2. Creative people are a little ‘out-there’: Really? We are? I don’t think I am any different or any more ‘out there’ than anyone else (although, one could start the argument of ‘what is normal’ and we’d be here for hours…). The reality is that creative people just seem more out there because we aren’t afraid to think outside the box – you should try it, you never know what you’ll find.
3. Creativity is done on accident: I guess this one isn’t completely untrue – sometimes creativity just happens. But, for the most part, creativity is done through hard work, dedication and the desire to be creative. Top creative minds rarely leave their work for accident, so why would you?
4. Deadlines make you more creative: For some people who love pressure, this may be true. But, for the majority of people, creativity needs time to grow and having the pressure of a deadline approaching doesn’t make for a clear mind and a creative spirit. Creative minds flourish when they are given the freedom to and deadlines aren’t very freeing.
5. Quiet rooms/really loud rooms will help you to be creative: What helps you to be creative is never allowing youself to define creativity. The noise (or lack thereof) in a room is only helpful if it works for you. There is no one atmosphere that creates creativity. For me, I have trouble focusing without country music in the background. Other writers I know have to have absolute silence or classical music. Do what makes you happy and create the atmosphere that helps you to get your creative juices flowing!
