Each friday I show off a piece of art, music or photography from an artist that I have found. If you have someone that you love, or a piece that makes you feel creative, let me know – I’m always looking for great new creative minds!
This week has been a little crazy – up and back from LA all day wednesday, meetings all day yesterday. I swear if it wasn’t for drive through starbucks, I wouldn’t have survived. The downside was I didn’t get much of a chance to write – the upside is I had great motivation to find today’s artist. As I mentioned, I spent wednesday driving through LA. For those of you who have never been on the 101 as it runs through downtown, you are missing some of the most unique art in LA. Yes, I am talking about the graffiti. I know that it is illegal, and that the walls and overpasses of the freeway are not the best places for it, and I also know that 99.9% of the time it is gang related – but that doesn’t take away from the talents of some of the taggers.
First, how do they get it on the sides of the overpasses? Are these guys base jumpers in their off time? I swear the only way to get to some of these places would be to be dangled over the side of the overpass on a rope (yikes!)
Second, some of the tagging is unbelievably impressive.
Now I would never promote illegal activity, so I have decided not to post photo’s of the graffiti that is seen on the freeways done by gangs, but it did stimulate me to look for legal graffiti artists. I was looking for an artist that was either commissioned or was tagging on something that wasn’t illegal. I found him in a group on Last.fm of graffiti artists. One of the pieces by user Morganik caught my attention right away. He has taken his amazing talent and put it onto every day items – with an eye for detail and whimsy.
Unfortunately, I don’t know much about him other than he is located in the UK. I am hoping that he sees this, as he deserves recognition, and I would love to post a link to any of his other sites. If you’ve seen his work, please let me know!
Have you seen any other graffiti that blew you away? What is the best city you’ve seen for top-notch graffiti (i’m a bit partial to LA…)?
