Oy. I’m bold in public. I laugh. A lot. I laugh when I’m reading a magazine, my twitter stream or when I see something that deserves to be laughed at.

And then middle-class ladies give me a look that screams “Shut up!”.

Not many people appreciate others’ boldness. That’s a fact. It probably helps that I am eristic

When I first read this I was reminded of an assignment I saw students partake in while I was in college. For either a drama or comm class the students were required to individually do an envigorated reading of the piece aloud in a well trafficed location on campus.

Want to be even more bold? Read aloud in public.

Thank you for the comment. This one came about from personal experience. I was sitting in a starbucks, reading Wally Lamb and had another patron sit down next to me and ask what I thought about the book. We ended up talking for about an hour and she is now a good friend of mine. I do agree that it is rare for people to take their heads out of their own thoughts and look around – but it can’t hurt to try. Plus, nothing says you can’t be the one commenting on their choice of reading material.

This sounds really passive. It’s hard to imagine people, who have self-motivated lives of their own, to bother to ask you something a bout a book you put on display.

That being said, my favorite book is Robert Lewis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. I still own my well-read fourth-grade copy of the book.
