How do you know you’re choosing the right something new to do?

Starting something new, whether it’s a project, a career path or just a new hairstyle can often be scary. You wonder whether you can pull it off, what people will think, and what it says about you. The truth is, there are 4 simple questions to ask yourself before starting something new.

  1. Why am I doing ______? If you are doing it to make someone else happy, it’s probably the wrong choice. If you are doing it to make you happy and it will make others happy too? Definitely going in the right direction.
  2. What will ______ accomplish in my life? If you are doing something that has zero potential to lead to something else, or improve something, you may want to rethink it. Whether it will make you more money, give you more free time or just improve your happiness – you should have something that your new thing helps you accomplish.
  3. Who will ______ affect? Is your new something going to hurt someone you care about? If that answer is yes, probably the wrong choice. But how do you know? What if it doesn’t physically hurt someone, but will cause emotional strain down the road? Many of those effects are hard to know, but should still be thought about. Remember what is most important in your life, if your new something puts any of those things at risk, you may want to rethink your decision
  4. Is ______ permanent? Yes? Do not make it a quick decision, give yourself time to weigh all options and sleep on it, at least a few times! No? Still think about it, as even non-permanent somethings can have serious consequences. But also remember that non-permanent somethings can be changed or removed much easier.

And trust me, these questions work for almost everything. Don’t believe me? Test it out! Replace the blank with something new you want to do/try and see for yourself.

    Hey Kirsten,

I have to say, yet another great blog post. I actually think this could serve as some great guidelines for people, and as you mention it applies to so many different areas of our lives.

I think the crucial thing you also pick up on is how the emotional attachment can come into play, I find it often hinders my thinking by OVER thinking the problem and weighing up the pros and cons too literally, it’s vital that a future entrepreneuer, or person on the move with their career takes into careful consideration that each move and decision should be thought through carefully, but when you start nitpicking your way through the problem you may find yourself getting sidetracked and not attaining your goal or target in the same manner, or correct manner based on your emotion!
