Finding creativity when you least expect it

April 2nd, 2009

Thanks to Rebecca, one of my readers, and her blog I love (Provocationofmind.com), I found a great new photographer/designer that I must share. In Rebecca’s post about self discipline in writing she commented back to one of her readers (Jana Souza) and included a link to her site. Rebecca also mentioned that Jana was an incredible photographer. Many of you know my addiction with photography. I can’t take a photo to save my life (okay, a good photo) but I am passionate about sharing other photographers work. One of my favorite couple of photographers is Jeff and Dana Sipper, the brilliant minds behind my first photoshoot!. Anyway, after reading Rebecca’s post and seeing the comment about Jana, I wandered to her blog too, and stumbled upon the most beautiful photo of cherry blossom’s I have ever seen:

After staring at it for honestly 10 minutes, I finally took my eyes away from the screen. I felt mellow, I felt relaxed, I felt happy. Those feelings are not ones I have had recently (with the new job, buying a condo, paying bills, managing my blog, etc…) and it is wonderful to feel. I hadn’t planned on even writing today, as my plate was overloaded as it was, but after seeing something this beautiful, I had to share it and had to write a bit. It got me thinking about ’simple beauty’. Simple beauty is a marketing and advertising style that seems to be gone with the wind. For example, take a look at an old ad for Coca-cola:

coke-old-adFirst thought? Simple beauty, right? Now look at a new ad for Coke: coca-cola-adDefinitely not simple or beautiful. More noisy and powerful.

Now I am going to claim one is more effective than the other, but it makes you wonder what happened – what changed over the last  72 years that has pulled us away from simple beauty? Which do you prefer? Is there still a place for it in our market, or is powerful and noisy the only way to go?

  • Two comments in one day from me, I'd say that officially declassifies me from a lurker reader and elevates me to a comment reader~~
Thank you for the comments about my blog and I'm delighted you discovered Jana as well. Everytime I go to her blog her photographs of her work, her walks (even if she won't claim to be a photographer, she certainly has an eye for it) delight my visual senses.
As for the adverstisments, I'm in the simple is better category. The bottom one is busy and distracting. In a way, it's great we have all this technology at our fingertips, the instant gratifications and such, but in that, I do believe we need balance to the hectic and simple is best in my humble opinion.
    Thanks so much,
    Rebecca

  • Thanks for the lovely shout out to Sipper Photography! You rock Kirsten!
  • This is so nice. I appreciate your kind words. In truth, I am not a photographer, just learning to play with taking photos; that shot was taken with a lil point and shoot while walking with the kiddos to get an ice cream. I agree about the simple beauty---things appear to be more techno, noisy and saturated in color and pattern of late. I do interior design, so I love it when I get to take it back to the simple, if a project or client allow for it.

I will come back and visit, your space is lovely here.
