Imploring you to de-lurk

** This post was originally posted this morning, and had a bunch of fabulous comments – but then something happened to my blog and I couldn’t figure out what. Thinking this posts may have had issues, I deleted it. That means your comments were deleted as well. I’m sorry. Please re-comment if you would like and hopefully I can figure out what is wrong with my blog!!!**

A twitter friend of mine, Ari Herzog, posted an experiment in January, asking all his readers to de-lurk . I had saved it in my ‘come back to it’ file and was thinking about it again today. I have to admit, I am a bit of a lurker. I read approximately 15 blogs every day, and another 15-20 posts that my twitter followers recommend throughout the day. I comment on 1 or 2. Sorry. I just do. I usually tweet about it if it is good, but no comment. Sometimes, I will even send the writer an email about the post rather than posting a comment – not sure why, but tweeting or emailing has always been less scary than commenting. Maybe because I always think my comment will be silly, or no one will care (worst, I think the writer won’t care!).

When I think about it now, my logic is really silly for two reasons.

One, I know how much I passionately care when my readers post a comment. And two, I have never once thought a comment someone posted on my blog was silly or worthless. So, I am taking the challenge with you – the challenge to de-lurk. I am going to make it my goal (if you’ll make it yours) to post a comment on at least 3 more blog posts daily, and hopefully mine will be one you chose!

To get us started, lets try something easy: Add a comment to this post. Even easier: add a comment to this post that is about you! Introduce yourself, how you found this site, what some of your favorite things are, your twitter url, your blog url, whatever url you love, and let us get to know you.

I’ll start:

I am Kirsten Wright, a 24 yr old conservative from Northern Cali (Los Gatos) now living in Orange County (Mission Viejo) with my husband of almost 2 years. I was a communications major at CSULB, am passionate about writing, speaking and creative anything. I started this blog because I love the feeling of being creative and wanted to share it with anyone who would listen. You can follow me on twitter @kirstenwright. It has taken me 5 years to finally realize that I need to bee 100% freelance to be happy. My favorite blog to read has nothing to do with business, but I think it’s hysterical (FAIL Blog) and you can always learn more about me by finding me on Facebook (if you add me as a friend, send a message with it!).

Now it’s your turn! C’mon…de-lurk! :)

Hi Kirsten, I’m Joe, I blog semi-anonymously as Ennuipundit, because my evil corporate overlords likely would prefer I expend my linguistic bullets in their cause, rather than mine. I’m in my early 30s, approaching the beginning of my second decade of employ for the same firm that hired me in the year after my graduation. I share your timeframe, I want to be freelance in a couple of years, no later than when I hit 35. My eventual goal is to see the stories that live and breathe in my head animate a printed page (or pixelated display) instead. I’ve lived all but my college years in Southern New England, and miss the refreshingly short winters of the Carolinas.

thought provoking kirsten. I think you set a good goal for your self and others. Interaction is a good thing. I think people, myself included, think comments are much more “permanent” or out there than a passing tweet or closed email. However, a comment really signals that the reader cared enough to understand the message.

Good point. One of the benefits of Twitter is people can just watch (lurk, if you want to call it that) until something strikes a chord.

Commenting on blog posts requires an extra effort – one that I am often willing to put forth. Blogs have a similar scenario. It’s easy to be a passive participant. It takes effort and thought to write a comment. Sometimes it’s not worth the time, but for me I often find it is worth the time.

As for Ari – he is quite a prodigious writer. I don’t know about his commenting or tweeting because I don’t follow him. However, I do subscribe to his blog.

There is a sub-question I think should be asked: Do you (should you) respond to comments on your blog? (Ans. I think the answer is yes, as part of the stream of thought).

btw – I grew up in SoCal (North and Central Orange County – Fullerton, La Habra Heights, and Portola Hills). Loved it, but don’t tell anyone … we love Seattle even more. It’s a lot like SoCal was back in the day (except with a little more rain).

Thanks for bringing this topic back to life. Not only did you get people to de-lurk, but you resurrected an old blog/tweet. Good work!

Hi Kristen. I am Kevin. I am new to blogging, but not new to writing as I have been writing technical articles and IT-based opinion columns since 1998. I also wrote a programming book in 2000 and am currently working on the second edition. I love my family, friends, jazz, wine, and New Orleans and will blog about them as well as what ever else comes to mind on a given day (my first official blog entry on kevinvandever.com was about twitter).

I live in Huntington Beach, CA, with my wife and two teenage daughters, but grew up in the Boston area, went to college at UNC Chapel Hill, NC, and spent 9 wonderful years in Chicago. All that said, I feel as close and connected to New Orleans as any place and get down there whenever I can.

I found your site from an RT from @wineharlots. You can follow me on Twitter at @jazzlifejunkie.

    Thanks.

Drag on losing the original post, but I didn’t have a chance to see it in the morning crush of blog posts and overnight emails so I’m glad you re-posted. I often click through to your posts to read more thoroughly than a quick glance via RSS – you have a lot of great tips. I think I’ve commented before.

Not sure how I found the blog – my best guess would be Twitter – it being recommended by someone I follow. I definitely came to your blog before I followed you on Twitter.

About me: Mari, 28 years old, working remotely in New York for an advocacy organization in Washington. I moved from the DC area to be with the man I married in May and my org wanted me to keep working. A temporary situation has become long term, and I’ve been working from home for more than a year. I create the org’s monthly newsletter, annual report and manage the websites and blog, among other communications efforts. I am interested in social media for professional growth, and not just in my current job. Plus I just like it and enjoy learning more about it.

On my personal blog I typically whine (although not about work, as some of my colleagues do read my blog occasionally), share a few things I like or find on the web and write the occasional post that could be of interest to people who don’t know me. :)

By training I should be a journalist – my undergrad (Oklahoma State) and master’s (U of Maryland) degrees are both in journalism. But I moved into PR/communications as a professional.

I think that’s it for me. Thanks for the chance to make an introduction. Best wishes.

Hi. I’m Brad. I am a 29-year-old public relations professional in Detroit. (Yep – people still live and work in and around the city.) I don’t recall exactly how I stumbled across your blog, but I think it was linked to by another blog. Anyway, it’s in my RSS reader. In my line of work, I’m always looking for exercises to enhance my creativity, so I find that your blog helps to do that.

I blog somewhat regularly at http://www.bradmarley.com, but it’s a work in progress. I can also be found on Twitter (@bmarley).

I’m obsessed with golf and the Detroit Tigers. In my spare time, I like to read and fix up my house with my wife.

This was a good idea, btw.

    Hi Kirsten and other de-lurkers!

I’m Nadia. I’m not sure how I found your site anymore, Kirsten, but it was found and I really enjoy it! :)

Some of my favorites things include all that is interactive within the web, reading, photo-ing, eating, creating, idea-ing and running/biking around Central Park. I’m 24, living in NYC and work in advertising.

You can find me on Twitter as @nadiapayan and on my blog http://littlemebigyou.com where I spend most of my time talking about design, social media and really cool creative things.

    I admit, I think I’m a lurker ~
I know I always appreciate it, very much when people comment on my blog…..however and I noticed someone else mentioned it, I have not found a good balance to addressing the comments I receive. I don’t really love email, because it seems to be something I can never catch up on, so I don’t email people thanking them for their comments very often. I guess I could start addressing them in the comment section themselves. i guess what I’m writing out load here is I would hate for anyone to think I didn’t care like you mentioned is a fear of yours on commenting.
Anyway, I do know I always enjoy your posts and look forward to what you have to say everytime I see an update in my feeds.
