It’s been talked about incessantly for the last year or two. Everyone who isn’t on it, wants to know what it is. Everyone on it knows how powerful it can be. But – why do you tweet? Anyone ever asked you that one? We do it by the minute, by the hour, by the day and by the event. We cover the important and the mundane. We talk, connect and listen. We started because someone recommended that we try it, we kept going for our own reason. It is that reason that I find so interesting. Many of us are extroverts, and a lot are introverts. Twitter can give us a sense of protection or a place to be exhibitionists. It is, at the heart, a social network. And whether we need a reason or not, we all have one somewhere. My reason?
I tweet because it improves my writing, connects me to other interesting people and provides an outlet for my creativity without being judged.
So, tell us, why do you tweet?

I tweet to increase my connection to folks who share similar interests, but I also like to expand my horizons by engaging with those who may not. I tweet to learn, to help, to engage and, yes, to sometimes promote my writing and video blogging.
I have only been tweeting for a few months but have already made some great connections and even some real friends. My whole family tweets now so that has added extra enjoyment. Oh yeah, and I enjoy it probably more than I should.
Keep on Tweetin’

Hey Kirsten,
Great question. I tweet to connect, grow my knowledge, build business relationships and have fun! I share whatever resources I can with the network I am building. I Like to learn from different voices, different perspectives and people doing similar things but in different contexts.
I also tweet because my strategy and marketing clients all want to know and understand the impact of “social media” on their respective businesses. So I dive in and learn and help them make the transition.
Confession…I enjoy it a lot!!
That is why I tweet. Thanks for asking.

…of course, you refer to the act of twittering itself, not using Twitter. But as you change the rationale of using Twitter, your twittering changes resultingly.
I tweet to learn.

From @AnnCurry (good for me as well): “because it satisfies our basic human wish to communicate something that might have value and to be VALUED in return.”
Kirsten, This is a simple, provocative and useful question. Nice work.
“I think, therefore I Tweet.”
I tweet to learn, help, laugh, ask, inform, discover…
I tweet to learn what it’s like to tweet. It’s a never-ending experience.
More seriously: to connect with other people, share information, ask questions, understand how connecting with others in this way helps us or hurts us. Above all, to have fun in the hope of being valuable to others.

Because everybody else is doing it.
Is that an acceptable answers?
No? Hmmmm, let me think.
I do it for the same reason a lot of other people do it: to connect. I want to know what like-minded individuals are doing, and how they’re doing it. I’m using it to become smarter.
On that note, the Tweeters who have 50,000 followers are in it for all of the wrong reasons. I think you’re defeating the purpose, at that point.

I tweet to connect with people in my fields- PR, communication, marketing. I also tweet to make connections and find job opportunities. Twitter is also where I find most of the links to blogs and articles that I grow to love.

I tweet because
- it gives me the opportunity to converse with people about topics in which I am interested. And I can talk with them at length or quickly.
- I learn from those I follow – and I hope to provide helpful information back.
- there are an amazing amount of fabulous people on Twitter with which to connect – and I want to connect with them!
I tweet because it makes me think!

I tweet both to help myself and to help others. I find that the Twitter universe is filled with people who have a great many talents to offer and a great many needs to fulfill. Once you navigate the spamming auto-followers, there are so many incredible people to communicate with, exchange ideas, get feedback, or just share an experience. The realtime process of doing so has been life changing.
