Creativity inspired by Wicked.
Last December, the hubby took me to see Wicked at the Pantages Theatre. Last month, I finally picked up Wicked (the book) and the sequels to the book, Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men. The play was incredible, but the books have been 1000x more impressive.
For those who have missed out on what these books are, the first, Wicked, is the story of the Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch of the West’s point of view. Who she was, how she grew up, and how she became to be known as Wicked. It explains Oz in a way that I could have never imagined, and shows that the original story was just one way of looking at the world. The second, Son of a Witch, is about the Wicked Witches son, Liir, who is discovered almost dead at the beginning and has no idea he is her son. As we read on, we live his life prior to being found (which includes leading Dorothy safely to the Wizard after she has killed the Witch). The third, A Lion Among Men, is the story from the cowardly Lion (read the books to know why “lion” is capitalized!) and how he was associated with the Witch and Dorothy.
So what is the point of this post? First, I love suggesting books to my readers, especially ones that have nothing to do with business. I read so many business books, business blog posts and business articles that sometimes, I am sick of business. When that is the case, I turn to reading anything else, and these 3 books kept me glued to their pages.
Second, the way that they were written – taking an idea that already existed and looking at it from another point of view – is a great lesson to apply in real life. How many times have you been discouraged to do something because it has already been done? Well, what about doing it from another point of view?
Next time you find yourself stuck with an idea, knowing you want to create something but not sure how, just take it from another perspective!
Are there any books you have read that had nothing to do with business but taught a business lesson still?
