Creativity through the years – 1995

November 16th, 2009

Over the next 25 posts, ending on my birthday, I will be covering an incredibly creative moment or idea from a year of my life AND one creative moment in either the marketing, advertising, technology or media world.

In 1995 I started my first business, selling custom designed stationary. Well, myself and my best friend Liz, started a business together. We were partners. She had the computer, printer and lots of clip art. And I had the ability to talk to anyone and was really good at showing off our portfolio. Together, we were a dynamite team. I took the order, showed off the options, and then we came back to her house, hopped on the computer and created the custom stationary. Both of our parents helped, allowing us to talk to their friends and business contacts, helping us to learn how to appropriately approach a sales situation, how to talk to adults, and how to deliver on our promises. There was no “I’m bored and over it” while there were orders that needed making…we learned discipline and had a lot of fun doing it. Those lessons stayed with me, and I guess the whole “entrepreneur” thing did too! :) While we didn’t strike it rich at 10 years old, we learned a lot about business.

In the media world, The DVD media format was announced at the end of 1995. Interesting fact? The official DVD specification documents have never defined the initialism DVD. Usage in the present day varies, with Digital Versatile Disc, Digital Video Disc, and DVD being the most common. While the first DVD player wasn’t sold until 1997, the introduction of the DVD marked a huge change in the technology for computers, television, and of course, movies. Do you remember your first DVD?

  1. It amazes me just how early stage things were back in 1995. You truly have experienced some powerful changing trends in your lifetime. Heck, I was only 5 at the time, and didn’t own a computer (what a life you lived :) ) .
