Does that hurt? Then don’t do that.

How many of us work on projects, take on clients, or attempt to do things that we know we’re just hurting ourselves trying to handle? *hint: the answer starts with every and ends with one*

When I attempted to hand code html or php, it hurts. So I don’t do that anymore. Instead, I found someone that I trust and I can work with that does enjoy hand coding for me, does it at a great price, and allows me to focus on my own strengths.

If I tried to work in illustrator and create things like Abduzeedo’s #377 Daily inspiration , that would hurt too. So guess what? I don’t do that. I hire someone for those pieces too.

Oh, and if I were required to do all my own accounting? Well, lets just say I’d probably need the Madoff defense…

Instead, I spend my time working with clients on blog management, wordpress and typepad designs and teaching people how to improve their social media strategy. Why? Because it doesn’t hurt when I do that.

I also don’t take on clients that are trying to get work for free, are extreme headaches or that I know won’t be worth working with. While this may sound harsh, not all clients are the same, and money does not make the “pain” worth it. (Freelance Folder has a great article about the types of projects you should turn down).

Bottom line, if you are doing something that causes you pain (mental, physical, emotional), stop doing it. You are amazingly talented at {fill in your own blank} and that is what you should focus on. Leave the extra stuff to someone else, because it is always less expensive to hire a professional than end up hurting yourself by attempting to do something you’re just not good at.

Now onto the fun part: Win a free bag of the oh-so-amazing Portola Coffee – just by adding a comment!!!

Here’s how: Add a comment to the post telling us one thing (or many things) that hurt when you do them. Or, things you have given up that did hurt.

C’mon…it’ll feel good to share, I promise!!

Then, tomorrow (tuesday) at 12pm PST, I will select one of the comments at random, and send you a fantastic bag of your choice, just in time for the holidays!

*extra comment credit to the first person who can tell me from which movie I got the quote and the book*

Wait, I have a chance to win free coffee? Who do I have to kill? LOL… Ok, what do I do that when I do it, it hurts? Does not listening to my wife count? Cause I surely do that… the “un”listening part and it surely hurts…

Ok, ok… I will try and be serious. Numbers. Anything with numbers I am not your guy. I know 6 is afraid of 7 cause 7, 8, 9 but other than that…

Ooh yeah, anything that requires a modicum of patience… Patience and I have not been on speaking terms for quite some time now…

Math. It hurts me to do math. Also to watch sports, to read maps or give directions. There are too many to list, really.

Sometimes, doing something you love can cause pain to-if it is being done in an unhealthy manner. I quit teaching because I loved the children too much and couldn’t stand to be part of a system that seemed to cause them pain.

It hurts when I try to be superwoman. lol I spread myself to thin, because I REALLY would like to do everything! I’ve made adjustments to my calendar and have refined my to-do list so I don’t go crazy.

Oh and like Dava, math hurts me, too! I’ll break out the handy dandy calculator to avoid having the “I’m confused, but I’m trying not let it show” face.

I hear ya Kirsten! Sometimes bartering hurts — I like bartering my skills for other people’s skills/products but when the trade gets lopsided, I’m out. Oh and push-ups. Push-ups hurt.

I tried to keep my own book for my business for about 7-8 months. It was like dragging an anchor around – even when I wasn’t actively in QuickBooks, I was haunted by the fact that I knew I wasn’t getting it right. All while advising clients to “right-source” their work. Finally took my own medicine and outsourced all accounting/bookkeeping. Wonderfully liberating!

And then there is this simple but profound quote regarding which clients/projects to take on: “Not all business is good business.” You’re to be applauded for learning this lesson so early on, Kirsten!

So much hurts me right now it’s hard to pick just one. I’m not freelance so can’t really pick and choose which assignments to accept. I just do as I’m asked, including some administrative type things that hurt. Sometimes I think my entire job hurts because I work isolated from home, but I’ve been doing it for two years so maybe I like pain.

It hurts when I have to do my taxes every year, but even if it would hurt less to outsource it, my wife and I have decided it makes more sense to keep it in-house. For security and for a better sense of the big picture.

My goal for 2010 is to be more wary of clients that underappreciate the value of great design. Both you and Tanya, are aware of how much this hurts. It even hurts to type this lol.

And the quote is from Love Guru, with Mike Meyers. Surprised nobody got that one.

    Free coffee FTW!

This comment is simply to re-affirm my first comment. And to stack the deck regarding the Portola offer. Because I might be tempted to stretch the rules just a teensy bit for great coffee!
