Creativity through the years – 1995

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Over the next 25 posts, ending on my birthday, I will be covering an incredibly creative moment or idea from a year of my life AND one creative moment in either the marketing, advertising, technology or media world.

In 1995 I started my first business, selling custom designed stationary. Well, myself and my best friend Liz, started a business together. We were partners. She had the computer, printer and lots of clip art. And I had the ability to talk to anyone and was really good at showing off our portfolio. Together, we were a dynamite team. I took the order, showed off the options, and then we came back to her house, hopped on the computer and created the custom stationary. Both of our parents helped, allowing us to talk to their friends and business contacts, helping us to learn how to appropriately approach a sales situation, how to talk to adults, and how to deliver on our promises. There was no “I’m bored and over it” while there were orders that needed making…we learned discipline and had a lot of fun doing it. Those lessons stayed with me, and I guess the whole “entrepreneur” thing did too! :) While we didn’t strike it rich at 10 years old, we learned a lot about business.

In the media world, The DVD media format was announced at the end of 1995. Interesting fact? The official DVD specification documents have never defined the initialism DVD. Usage in the present day varies, with Digital Versatile Disc, Digital Video Disc, and DVD being the most common. While the first DVD player wasn’t sold until 1997, the introduction of the DVD marked a huge change in the technology for computers, television, and of course, movies. Do you remember your first DVD?

Creativity through the years – 1994

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Over the next 25 posts, ending on my birthday, I will be covering an incredibly creative moment or idea from a year of my life AND one creative moment in either the marketing, advertising, technology or media world.

1994…The year that I found my new genre of books to love and “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle” was created.

As I’m sure you saw from my post about creating books in 1990, I fell in love with reading and writing at a very young age. In 1994, I found mystery novels. I started with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, and as the years progressed worked my way up through Diane Mott Davidson’s collections (Chef who solves crimes, how cool!), and Mary Higgins Clark The problem? My overactive imagination often meant that I didn’t sleep very well after…Luckily, that never deterred my love for reading and I still enjoy mystery (with a splash of romance).

Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle…better known as Yahoo! was started by David Filo and Jerry Yang, Ph.D. candidates in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. It was originally meant to keep track of their like interests on the Internet. But, they decided to make it available for friends and family. As word began to spread, the users stemmed outside of their contacts and grew rapidly. They experienced their first million-hit day in the fall of 1994, and knew they were on to something. 2 years, 8 investors, 49 employees and a $2 million dollar investment later, Yahoo! officially took the Internet world by storm. This just goes to show you, brilliant ideas do not always start as something phenomenal. All it takes is one idea and the drive to make it happen…

Creativity through the years – 1993

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Over the next 25 posts, ending on my birthday, I will be covering an incredibly creative moment or idea from a year of my life AND one creative moment in either the marketing, advertising, technology or media world.

In 1993 my creativity took off, it was the point that I realized I wanted to try everything, test out tons of classes and figure out how things worked. I chose to go after the GATE program in my school district. The program allows a select group of students to take special classes of their choosing. The classes include languages, acting, performance (very different than acting!), creative writing, story telling, science, dissection, and more. I was accepted into the program and was so excited to get to take 3 classes this year. During those classes, I discovered how much I loved creative writing (not just writing in general) with a story telling class, that I would never be a vet (I took a dissection class…it didn’t go well), and that I may be a bit of a ham (I took a few performance classes). While those classes only lasted a couple summers, the lessons I learned about myself stuck with me forever.

Today, rather than sharing a marketing/ad event from 1993, I want to know what you remember most from that year?

And to make it even more fun…one person will win an invite to Google Wave!!

To win, think about 1993: Where were you? What were you doing (school? College? Working full-time?)? Do you have a favorite memory or a great story to share? Anything you want…Comments will be open until 12pm tomorrow, and I will pick the winner via random number generator….so get commenting!! :)

Creativity through the years – 1992

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Over the next 25 posts, ending on my birthday, I will be covering an incredibly creative moment or idea from a year of my life AND one creative moment in either the marketing, advertising, technology or media world.

While my goal of this post series has been to uncover where my creativity, personality, writing and finally this business first came from…1992 takes us in a different direction. Why? Well because in 1992, I had my first crush. And as anyone can tell you, a crush is life changing. A crush takes all your focus away from anything else. A crush means everything at that age. So, during 1992, I am pretty sure the only creative thing I did was doodle his name* in my trapper-keeper repeatedly.

Luckily, not everyone was as distracted as I was in 1992, and NBC once again proved that they have some skills in the TV department and hired Jay Leno to fill the late night shoes left behind when Johnny Carson retired.
